Recreation

Home to eighteen hole golf course, the sport is well served in Jackson, by the Wentworth Golf Club. Winter visitors can enjoy downhill skiing at Black Mountain and Nordic adventure at Jackson Ski Touring Foundation.  Many lodging properties are situated adjacent to cross country trails, making for perfect right-out- the-back-door skiing.   Other winter activities available include outdoor skating and sleigh rides at Nestlenook Farm.  The Jackson Falls in the heart of the village make an ideal location for a picnic, and their pools and rippling waterfalls offer a refreshing break from hot summer days.  Hikers will enjoy the many varieties of trails and terrain that surrounds the village with breathtaking scenery.   For those with a passion for fishing, the point where the Wildcat River meets the Ellis is a favorite for fly fishing; and for horse riders, there are several stables offering lessons and treks for all ages and abilities.  On route 16 there's the magic of Storyland to be explored, a must do day out for families.

Overall, Jackson is one of the most enticing towns for those who love a quintessentially New England village surrounded by the beautiful White Mountains, and offering fabulous opportunities for indoor and outdoor recreation, dining and shopping.

Ski Conditions

Despite seeing little new snow recently, Black Mountain has done a sterling job on snow making and grooming to ensure tip top ski conditions for visitors; Those deciding to ski at Black Mountain should also take a peek at the sculptures from the recent snow sculpting competition held there recently.

For those who enjoy cross country skiing, Jackson Cross Country Ski Touring Foundation is concentrating on quality of grooming over quantity with plenty of trails open and being enjoyed by nordic skiers visiting the village.

Shovel Handle Pub and Black Mountain to battle it out in 75th Birthday ski race

Black Mountain's recent 75th birthday celebrations and the fact that Whitney's Inn also celebrates its 75th birthday this year have provided the inspiration for a great new event to be held at our local, popular, family ski mountain in association with the Whitney's owned Shovel Handle Pub, named after the Shovel Handle Lift, the first overhead cable lift in the United States.

Saturday February 27th 2010 will see a down and dirty ski race competition!  Any interested racers with a lift ticket should show up in the Lostbo pub after noon to register .  Each competitor will be assigned to a team and will report to the starting gate on Jackson Standard at 2.00p.m....after that....battle commences...may the best 75 year old team win!  An Apres race party will begin in the Lostbo Pub immediately following the race with music by Dan Byrnes.  At 5.00 p.m. the party will move to the Shovel Handle Pub, where the winning team will be announced, prizes awarded and live music will be playing.  Definitely plan to be home late on this day!

Event sponsors for the race are the Shovel Handle Pub, Naukabout and Harpoon.  Entrance to participate in the race is $5 per person and all proceeds will help support the Black Mountain Race Team.

7th annual 100,000 vertical challenge To benefit Make-A-Wish Foundation® of New Hampshire

If you are capable of skiing or riding over 100,000 vertical feet in one day, then mark the date for this great marathon skiing and riding event at Wildcat Mountain, scheduled for Monday March 1st.   The expected 40 participating skiers and riders up for the challenge will also need to raise associated pledge donations to benefit Make-A-Wish Foundation® of New Hampshire.

Last year's "100K" day saw participants completing at least 48 runs via the famed Lynx Trail's 2,100 plus vertical descent from summit to base.  Since the first 100,000 vertical foot challenge took place in 2004, the annual event's cumulative donation amount has exceeded $100,000 and has established Wildcat Mountain amongst the higher "Society of Strength" donors recognized by Make-A-Wish Foundation® of New Hampshire and directly benefiting their endeavors.

Registration for the event is $65 ($35 for Wildcat Mountain season pass-holders) and includes lift access for the day, a ticket voucher valid for another day this season, exclusive lift-line privileges while completing the 48 runs (maximum 50 runs), light breakfast/lunch items, snacks, and refreshments during the event, and prizes awarded for the top fundraisers and participants during an awards pasta dinner held following the event.  All ages and disciplines are welcome to participate, but a limit of 40 participants and a minimum $250 in pledge donations to the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of New Hampshire must be acquired and provided on the morning of the event, Monday, March 1st.  For more information and to register, visit skiwildcat.com/100Kday.html.

The mission of the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of New Hampshire (newhampshire.wish.org) is to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. It strives to provide children with the hope for better times, the strength for the tough times and the joy to experience the present. The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of New Hampshire is part of the nation's largest and most recognized wish-granting organization, with chapters and volunteers throughout the United States and the world.
